Celine’s Spring Summer 2022 menswear collection, “Cosmic Cruiser,” saw Hedi Slimane continue his shift away from the Paris show calendar into self-directed film after the pandemic struck. Staged against the Mediterranean landscape of the Embiez archipelago and soundtracked by Izzy Camina, the show unfolded on a stark, black motocross course where teams of high-octane, shirtless bikers launched themselves into the sky while models strode down the runway, turning the presentation into a kinetic and liberating expression of youth. Slimane’s Celine universe remains consistent in tone. Whether set on a Formula One circuit or within a Loire Valley château, his work centres on a romanticized vision of youth, eroticism and, contemporary subculture. With “Cosmic Cruiser,” Slimane’s newest obsession is neo-rave, drawing on 1980s escapism (which led to the Second Summer of Love), an influence that's apt for a collection centred on post-pandemic youth. This season also marked one of Slimane’s most expansive engagements with contemporary art, bringing together fourteen artists whose works were translated directly onto garments. The roster boasts Amy Dorian, Anna Hofmann, Emerson Snowe, Anne MacKenzie, Harry Wyld, Marcelo Lavin, Mary Herbert, Paisley Verse, Sara Yukiko, Scott Daniel Ellison, Scott Reeder, Sophy Hollington and Tyler Childers, turning the collection into a moving, wearable exhibition.
