Comme des Garçons Autumn Winter 1995, titled “Sweeter Than Sweet,” was conceived by Rei Kawakubo as an exercise in pushing "sweetness" so cloying that it becomes overpowering. Rather than celebrating femininity in a conventional sense, the collection examined how decorative codes associated with womanhood are constructed and imposed.
Pastel colours, lace, tulle, embroidery, gingham and childlike dress forms were frequently paired with silhouettes that restricted movement, including designs that immobilized the arms. In some looks, delicate surface decoration was set against stiff, sculptural folds and dense boiled wool, resisting the softness of the embellishment. The tension between lightness and heaviness transformed sweetness into something physically and psychologically constraining.
Within the broader context of CDG in the 1990s, this collection reflects Kawakubo’s ongoing critique of Western ideals of beauty and gendered dress. Rather than rejecting femininity outright, she exposed it from within. Revealing how qualities often read as gentle or pleasing can function as mechanisms of limitation.
This beautiful high waisted, A-line skirt features an intricate, all over floral brocade seen in numerous of the runway looks.
