Who said you can't mix different patterns?

Rei Kawakubo presented the world with a colorful and and kitsch medley of deconstruction for Comme Des Garcons Homme Plus Spring Summer 2010 “Random Collage.” As suggested by the collection's name, she pulled apart traditional menswear elements such as bow ties, aran knits and kilts before recontextualizing them within contemporary tailoring, allowing blazers, shirts and suit pants to act as canvases for her multi-material concoctions.

Stripes, plaids, argyle, and gingham collide with bold botanical prints, occasionally interrupted by stitched-on ties and playful adornments like pompoms and Medicom Bearbricks. By extracting panels from different garments and layering them together, the result is a dense assemblage of clashing colors and references, and yet it holds together.

This sense of incoherence gradually softens in the final monochromatic looks, where reconstruction is pared back into simpler, black-and-white variations.

Seen in look 7, this reconstructed jacket features inside-out corduroy pockets and a striped knitted front panel layered over a printed oriental brocade on a grey base.
